NEXT-GEN Nescot Year 4 HND - VHS VFX Example

For this short project, we were tasked with creating a video using stock footage and VFX to create the appearance of old corrupted VHS footage.

In order to do this, first, I got a stock video and added it to a Adobe After Effects project, before then using the preset effects to add a grain texture to the footage.

Next, I added a line of distortion that would travel down the screen multiple of times, giving the effect of broken and old footage.

In order to reinforce a damaged-film overlay and dirt static texture over the top of the footage, giving a older, decrepit and distorted appearance I added a grain texture to the video, making it appear older like a VHS tape.

Once I did that, I created a pre-composition using the effects and footage I had and duplicated it two times.

After duplicating the pre-composition, I then used the Set Channels effect to make each pre-composition layer a different colour by removing the other two colours from the shot.

Then, I changed the two of the pre-composition's layers modes into screen modes so that they appeared relatively see through. I used the arrow keys to move the blue layer to the left with the red layer being moved to right to give a distorted colour effect, to show the footage as being incredibly old.

Overall, I believe I did well on this small project because the final footage looks old and distorted, similarly to that of a damaged VHS tape. However, if I could improve the final product I would increase the frequency and number of distortion lines that move down the screen.
