During this project we were tasked with creating a VFX set extension for
a video of our choosing. For my project, I first decided to create a
scene extension of two people fighting, however, this proved too
problematic and complex, leading me to instead use stock footage of
someone driving a car. Unfortunately this did not work either and I ultimately created a set extension of myself sitting in front of a window.
Before creating the VFX video and breakdown, I created a small chart to keep track of what task I intended to complete throughout the project using a GANT chart:
This helped me organise my time between multiple projects at the same time and allowed me to set the time that I would move on to the next task.
First, in relation to the brief I began creating a concept video of each idea that I had relating to my breakdown reel, obviously, only one of them actually worked well, as the others were too hard to rotoscope. This video had to be arround 5-10 seconds long and required some camera movement. After this I moved onto a work in progress render of the scene, showing me sitting at a table with an ocean of fish shown behind me.
Unfortunately, at this point in time my computer broke and was sent back to the manufaturers for repair. This heavily slowed my progress and made it almost impossible to add any feedback I had gained to my scene.
The feedback I had acquired came from multiple places. Firstly, I gained feedback from my family for different VFX shots, including different ideas for the window shot and example of the car rotoscope as well. They convinced me to restart the rotoscoping progress with the window scene and helped me choose what I would show outside of the window, with it eventually being an ocean with large fish swimming behind me.
The second lot of feedback I received came from my teacher, giving me tips and explaining improvements I could make, such as: improving the lighting by darkening the inside of the building or brightening the ocean outside and removing objects from the table I sat at by using masking tools.
However, because of my computer being unavailable, much of my teachers feedback set to me was left uncompleted by the end of the project.
As a result, I believe I can still greatly improve the work I have, if given the proper tools and time to complete it, fixing the lighting and adding minor improvements such as sound to the scene.
Feedback can be obtained in many different ways, such as trailers, test screenings and reviews from critics. An example of audience feedback relating to a trailer can be seen with the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie, which received massive amounts of critisism on the release of their first trailer surrounding the design of Sonic. This feedback impacted on the film's image immensely and led to the VFX teams completely recreating Sonic's design with a more cartoon like appearance in order to appease fans, which worked.
